Intangible Cultural Heritage – Cha Chaan Teng (Craftsmanship)

Synopsis
After the Second World War, Hong Kong became a crucible of East-meets-West culture, giving rise to a brand-new culinary landscape. Bing Sutt (ice room) ingeniously combined Western-style bread with Hong Kong-style milk tea, offering quick and affordable delights that nourished the everyday lives of the locals. It was here that the pineapple bun, egg tart, and milk tea began their legacy, becoming the collective taste memory of generations of Hong Kong people.
In 2014, the craftsmanship behind these three snacks was inscribed onto the Intangible Cultural Heritage list of Hong Kong, hailed as the modern “Three Treasures of the Cha Chaan Teng.” They are not only a delicious crystallization of Sino-Western cultural fusion but also etch the city’s journey from the post-war era to the present day, bearing witness to how Hong Kong steeping its history in its cuisine and its culture passing down through flavour.
