Hiddensee

Synopsis
This hybrid documentary by award-winning director Annekatrin Hendel takes a magnifying glass approach to the tiny German island of Hiddensee in the Baltic Sea, allowing us to examine the whole of Germany and its eventful history. Known as the island of freedom, there is now a shift to the right here, which was already present long before the Third Reich. Annekatrin Hendel’s film looks back 100 years from today’s struggle between the mayor and the pastor. Personal stories of famous islanders such as Nobel Prize winner Gerhart Hauptmann and the first female film star Asta Nielsen reveal social upheavals that are still taking place today throughout Germany and around the world. The unspoken becomes visible and intense, also through a never-before-seen interplay of puppets, powerful images of nature in Cinemascope, and epic black and white.
