Synopsis
A 17-year-old, having witnessed his father’s relentless quest for an answer to the Wang Family’s origin, embarks on a journey from Ningxia to Shaanxi. Through interviews and efforts alongside his father, the director manages to reconstruct the life of his Grandpa and decipher the family’s enduring impulse to trace roots.
Set against the sweeping landscape and authentic culture of Yanchi, Ningxia—where pastoral beauty meets the echoes of Northern Shaanxi folk songs (Xintianyou)—the film moves beyond a traditional genealogical investigation and delivers a poignant meditation on inheritance, displacement, and why we human beings look back.
