Being known as the “Water Villages” and the “Venice of the East,” Tai O retains a rich traditional folk culture and unique temple architecture. Each temple, carrying the faith and hopes of the villagers, serves as a testimony of local history and culture.
Among these, the Yeung Hau Temple stands out as a cultural gem of Tai O. The temple houses artifacts and offerings with a history of over 320 years and is honored with multiple intangible cultural heritage awards. In particular, the century-old traditional ritual “Tai O Dragon Boat Water Parade” is a showcase of the unity of the local boat community. Through land and water rituals, they pray for favorable weather and bountiful catches.
In the past three years, we delved deeply into the mysterious history of this temple, explored its profound connections with the villagers, uncovered the traditional customs and festive activities that had been passed down to the Seventh generation, and embraced the everlasting charm of this culture.
